'Judge for Yourself'
You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time? Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right?
- Luke 12:56-57
This passage seems to call us to identify the sin and evil all around us. A few chapters earlier, however, the gospel clearly admonishes us not to judge our fellow human beings (Luke 6:37). How can we identify the evil in our world without judging others?

First, we should remember that we are all sinners. We must begin by identifying the sins in our hearts and asking God to help us purge them. Once we take responsibility for our own actions and decisions, we can respond to the sins of our world. How? By judging for ourselves what is right and then doing it. This means refusing to participate in what is evil. It means loving as Jesus taught. It means speaking the truth, standing up for those who are suffering and sharing our abundance with people in need.
Lord, help us always to judge for ourselves what is right and to do it.
