'Illuminating the Way'
St. Nicholas
The LORD is God, and he has given us light.
- Psalm 118:27
The poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is reported to have cried "Mehr licht! Mehr licht!" ("More light! More light!") on his deathbed. The meaning underneath his words is subject to interpretation. Was he calling out for inspiration? Clarity? A wish to have the drapes opened to let more light into his room?

In this first week of our Advent journey, we may also be longing and praying for more light to come into our lives. Are there dark corners where we stand in shame or brokenness? Are we seeking direction to discern a choice? Do we hope for confirmation that we are on the right path? Are we open to enlightenment in becoming a more prayerful, loving person in our relationships?

Emmanuel, God-with-us, is the light that has come and continues to come into our lives and our world. May his presence illumine for us the way to move forward this Advent and always.
- Sr. Chris Koellhoffer, I.H.M.
