DAILY DEVOTIONS: Mar 30 'Prayer and Knowledge'

'Prayer and Knowledge'
Lenten Weekday
For it is love that I desire, not sacrifice,
and knowledge of God rather than holocausts.
- Hosea 6:6
A woman with whom I had been friends for forty years died recently. We first met when we were young parents and part of a parish prayer group. We continued to pray together long after we left the prayer group, during which time she experienced a great deal of upheaval in her life, including physical and emotional abuse and a painful divorce. In the midst of the turmoil, she told me that she had cried out to God, asking to know what God was really like.

Her plea was an honest prayer and one which proved to be powerful. As old distorted images of God as a demanding judge began to crumble, she became more compassionate, and her passion for justice deepened. Her journey reminds me that genuine prayer changes us. And genuine prayer inevitably opens our hearts to the least among us.
