DAILY DEVOTIONS:Aug 13 'Childlike Comparisons'

'Childlike Comparisons'
Sts. Pontian and Hippolytus
The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?"
- Matthew 18:1
Comparisons are quite odious and serve mainly to stimulate jealousy, self-aggrandizement or self-deprecation. Assessments continually loom around human minds: "Who has more money? Who's better looking? Whose children turned out the best? Who appears to be more spiritual?" The disciples fell into this same trap: "Who's the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven? Who will be first? Who will sit at your right hand?" Imagine how startled they must have been when Jesus called over a young child, pointing out that what counts is to have a trusting and loving relationship with God much like the young one at his side did.

Did this incident cure the disciples of their desire to compare? Most surely it gave them a lot to think about. Hopefully, it does the same for us too.
