DAILY DEVOTIONS:Sep 28 'Attention to Darkness'

'Attention to Darkness'
St. Wenceslaus; St. Lawrence Ruiz and Companions
Jesus said to his disciples, "Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men." But they did not understand...and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
- Luke 9:44-45
Here in the middle of Ordinary Time, this passage serves to remind us, as it did the disciples, to not forget where this is going. Jesus has been busy winning followers and spreading God's word, but dark days are ahead. "Pay attention," he warns his disciples. They didn't understand.

But we have the benefit of time. We've been told and are able to understand. Do we still ignore Jesus' warning all the same? When things are going smoothly, and we feel full of love and gratitude, do we close our eyes to the darkness? Jesus promised us peace, yet sin and suffering abound. We must grapple with our own pain and that of the people we love. Jesus faced the darkness, too. What's more, he promised to be with us when we do.
Lord, help me to pay attention and to trust in you.
