DAILY DEVOTIONS:Oct 8 'Repentance and Respite'

'Repentance and Respite'
When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes.
- Jonah 3:6
Most of us can imagine the man on a crowded street corner, holding a sign that reads: "The End Is Near."

Few of us, however, are likely to pay any heed to it. Certainly, we wouldn't expect a great ruler to hear of it and go into repentance mode, like the king of Nineveh. All of us, great and small, tend to be deeply attached to our earthly priorities, routines and worries. We don't readily engage in self-reflection or pause to listen to the voice of Jesus.

This is what makes Jesus' gentle rebuke to Martha so compelling. In today's gospel, he reminds Martha that she is "anxious and worried about many things" (Luke 10:41). Whether we are busy in the marketplace, the workplace or the home, Jesus offers the grace of repentance and respite. Let's not miss the opportunity that today provides.
