Our Lady of Guadalupe
Blessed are you, daughter, by the Most High God, above all the women on earth.
- Judith 13:18
In the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., there are dozens of chapels dedicated to Mary. Each represents a national or ethnic devotion to the Mother of God. Many commemorate apparitions of the Madonna. It is with a mother's love that Mary has made herself known to so many peoples.

One of the most remarkable apparitions is commemorated this day. Our Lady of Guadalupe, dressed in the garb of a young Mayan woman and appearing to St. Juan Diego, helped bring about the conversion of the New World. She did not appear to the high and the mighty, but to a simple Mayan peasant. By her example, she "dispersed the arrogant...but lifted up the lowly" (Luke 1:51, 52).

How blessed we are to have such a Mother, merciful and loving.
Nurture in me, O Lord, the simple, brave faith of St. Juan Diego.
