Morning Prayer for Saturday after Ash Wednesday

Morning Prayer for Saturday after Ash Wednesday
(Saturday after Ash Wednesday)

Opening Sentence
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us; but if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:8, 9

Confession of Sin
Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter
V: Lord, open our lips.
R: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Venite Psalm 95:1-7
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

Come, let us sing to the Lord; *
let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving *
and raise a loud shout to him with psalms.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

For the Lord is a great God, *
and a great King above all gods.
In his hand are the caverns of the earth, *
and the heights of the hills are his also.
The sea is his, for he made it, *
and his hands have molded the dry land.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, *
and kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture and the sheep of his hand. *
Oh, that today you would hearken to his voice!

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lord is full of compassion and mercy: Come let us adore him.

The Psalm or Psalms Appointed
Psalm 30 Exaltabo te, Domine

1   I will exalt you, O LORD, because you have lifted me up *
and have not let my enemies triumph over me.
2   O LORD my God, I cried out to you, *
and you restored me to health.
3   You brought me up, O LORD, from the dead; *
you restored my life as I was going down to the grave.
4   Sing to the LORD, you servants of his; *
give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness.
5   For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, *
his favor for a lifetime.
6   Weeping may spend the night, *
but joy comes in the morning.
7   While I felt secure, I said, "I shall never be disturbed. *
You, LORD, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains."
8   Then you hid your face, *
and I was filled with fear.
9   I cried to you, O LORD; *
I pleaded with the Lord, saying,
10   What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? *
will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness?
11   Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me; *
O LORD, be my helper."
12   You have turned my wailing into dancing; *
you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy.
13   Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; *
O LORD my God, I will give you thanks for ever.
Psalm 32 Beati quorum

1   Happy are they whose transgressions are forgiven, *
and whose sin is put away!
2   Happy are they to whom the LORD imputes no guilt, *
and in whose spirit there is no guile!
3   While I held my tongue, my bones withered away, *
because of my groaning all day long.
4   For your hand was heavy upon me day and night; *
my moisture was dried up as in the heat of summer.
5   Then I acknowledged my sin to you, *
and did not conceal my guilt.
6   I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD." *
Then you forgave me the guilt of my sin.
7   Therefore all the faithful will make their prayers to you in time of trouble; *
when the great waters overflow, they shall not reach them.
8   You are my hiding-place; you preserve me from trouble; *
you surround me with shouts of deliverance.
9   I will instruct you and teach you in the way that you should go; *
I will guide you with my eye.
10   Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding; *
who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you."
11   Great are the tribulations of the wicked; *
but mercy embraces those who trust in the LORD.
12   Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the LORD; *
shout for joy, all who are true of heart.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Lessons
A reading from Ezekiel 39:21-29

I will display my glory among the nations; and all the nations shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid on them. The house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God, from that day forward. And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt treacherously with me. So I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword. I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their transgressions, and hid my face from them. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Now I will restore the fortunes of Jacob, and have mercy on the whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for my holy name. They shall forget their shame, and all the treachery they have practiced against me, when they live securely in their land with no one to make them afraid, when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them from their enemies' lands, and through them have displayed my holiness in the sight of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the LORD their God because I sent them into exile among the nations, and then gathered them into their own land. I will leave none of them behind; and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord GOD.

A reading from Philippians 4:10-20

I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it. Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. In any case, it was kind of you to share my distress. You Philippians indeed know that in the early days of the gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. For even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me help for my needs more than once. Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit that accumulates to your account. I have been paid in full and have more than enough; I am fully satisfied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. And my God will fully satisfy every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Song of the Redeemed Magna et mirabilia
Revelation 15:3-4

O ruler of the universe, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done, *
surpassing human understanding.
Your ways are ways of righteousness and truth, *
O King of all the ages.
Who can fail to do you homage, Lord,
and sing the praises of your Name? *
for you only are the Holy One.
All nations will draw near and fall down before you, *
because your just and holy works have been revealed.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

The Apostles' Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayers
